Necessity of Maintaining Your Nissan
Nissan vehicles are built using the latest technology and under strict standards of quality control. They are also designed to minimise required maintenance with longer intervals between service to provide you with savings of both money and time.
Scheduled maintenance is necessary however, to make sure that your Nissan operates properly and efficiently for the categories listed below:
Lubricants Your Nissan uses various oils and fluids including engine oil, engine coolant, transmission fluid, battery fluid, differential fluid. These oils and fluids perform very important functions, such as lubricating and cooling the vehicle and preventing corrosion. They periodically need proper refilling or replacing.
Rubber parts Belts, hoses and boots are made with rubber which can deteriorate over time. They need new replacements if they are worn or deteriorated.
Normal deterioration Movement creates friction, which in turn causes wear on may vehicle parts. Vehicles are equipped with many parts for which, as part of optimum operation, gradually wear and tear. these parts include, but are not limited to, tyres, brake pads, clutch plates, etc. They are essential for normal safe vehicle operation and must be periodically replaced.
Failure to complete scheduled Nissan maintenance may result in reduced vehicle performance, compromised safety or possible breakdowns, as well as exclusion from warranty coverage.
The maintenance schedule is set based on Nissan's research and experimentation on the life spans of lubricants or parts that require recurring replacement. Accordingly, please ensure that your Nissan vehicle receives its proper maintenance care. Follow the instructions in your Nissan Warranty Information & Maintenance Booklet. It is also necessary for day-to-day vehicle operations to be checked by you or on your behalf as mentioned in the "General Maintenance" heading in the "Maintenance and do-it-yourself" section in the Nissan Owner's Manual.
We appreciate your understanding of how important this information is and trust you will enjoy a long and satisfying service experience at Hardman Nissan.
What is maintenance?
Scheduled maintenance There are 2 types of maintenance schedule. A Service Advisor at Hardman Nissan will explain to you which of the 2 types of maintenance schedule you should follow. This depends on your driving habits, climate conditions in your area, etc. The 2 schedules and their conditions are described below:
Maintenance Schedule for Severe Driving Conditions (for vehicles first registered after June 2001) If you mostly drive your vehicle under one or more of the conditions in the list below, please follow the "Maintenance Under Severe Driving Conditions" column of the maintenance section of your Nissan Customer Information Booklet.
A: Repeatedly driving short distances
B: Driving in dusty conditions
C: Driving with frequent braking
D: Idling of engine for extensive periods
E: Driving in extremely unfavourable weather conditions
F: Driving in areas where temperatures are extremely low or extremely high
G: Towing a trailer or caravan
H: Driving on rough and/or muddy roads or in the desert
I: Driving in areas which are high in corrosive materials e.g., salt
J: Frequent driving through water
K:Driving in high humidity or mountainous areas
Maintenance Schedule for Normal Driving Conditions If you mostly operate your Nissan under conditions other than those listed above, please follow the "Maintenance Under Normal Driving Conditions" column of the maintenance section of your Nissan Customer Information Booklet.
Unscheduled maintenance Apart from the scheduled maintenance items for which there are set maintenance intervals, there are other items that usually operate normally without periodic maintenance. However, if a malfunction of these items does occur, it could affect the performance of the engine or the vehicle. These other items should be checked and adjusted if necessary, if a symptom of a malfunction is noticed or suspected.
Typical Maintenance Instructions for Nissan Emission Control System (petrol engine only)
Examples of the typical unscheduled inspection items would include (but not necessarily be limited to the following):
- Check fuel lines
- Adjust intake / exhaust valve clearance
- Check cooling system and mixture of engine coolant
- Check / adjust drive belts
In normal driving conditions, the air cleaner filter should be replaced at the specified interval. However, if your Nissan is driven in dusty areas, it will accelerate clogging of the element, causing the element to need to be replaced more frequently.
- Check pre-air cleaner (where fitted)
- Check engine oil and oil filter
In normal driving conditions, the engine oil and oil filter should be replaced according to the maintenance schedule. Under severe driving conditions, however, the oil and oil filter require replacing more frequently.
- Replace fuel filter (where fitted)
In normal driving conditions, the filter should be changed at the designated interval. However, under severe driving conditions, it may require replacing more frequently.
- Replace spark plugs
- Check ignition wires
- Check positive crankcase ventilation system
- Check PCV valve for proper operation
- Check EVAP vapour lines
- Check heated oxygen sensor (Exhaust gas sensor)

Scheduled Maintenance Log
The Customer Information Booklet contains a Scheduled Maintenance Log which provides an easy reminder of what and when maintenance checks need to be performed on your Nissan.
This log can also be used for keeping your Nissan's scheduled maintenance history. This record will help Hardman Nissan keep an accurate record of your vehicle's condition and performance even after many years of ownership. Additionally the scheduled maintenance history will help contribute to the resale value of your vehicle.
For vehicles registered prior to June 2001, please refer to the Nissan Owner's Handbook (Periodic Maintenance Service Records Section).
How to read and use the scheduled maintenance log The scheduled maintenance items for every interval are listed in your log. The kilometres or months at the top of the log are there as a reminder that you need to service your vehicle either after a specified number of kilometres or months, whichever occurs first.
If you use the Normal Driving Conditions Maintenance Schedule, you should observe the items listed in the "Normal" column in the log. Similarly, if you use the Severe Driving Conditions Maintenance Schedule you should follow the items listed in the "Severe" column in the log. The specified terms from "A to K" in the "Severe" column refer to the severe driving conditions' letters on the "Scheduled Maintenance" page in this MAINTENANCE section.
Each time your Nissan vehicle is serviced at Hardman Nissan, your Service Advisor will record his/her contact name, the date, mileage and Hardman Nissan, and sign the service log as evidence that the scheduled service has been completed.
If any additional services are required as a result of scheduled service, your Service Advisor will include this recommendation in the "Memo" column in the log.
